WATER UPDATE - 5:30pm - 12 January 2010

CURRENT UPDATE - As a result of record-breaking peaks in water usage in recent days, reservoirs in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area are at a critically low level. In order to recharge water storage and return to normal supply levels, Council Engineers are currently ‘throttling water supplies across the whole county. ‘Throttling’ means reducing the volume of water going into the network from the reservoir.

As a consequence most areas in the county will be experiencing reduced pressure and some premises may go without water for long periods of the day. The Council will try to maintain pressure during peak demand periods but may have to reduce pressure at other times. Localised temporary disruptions to supply may be experienced by consumers in all areas. While every effort will be made to maintain supplies at periods of peak demand this may not always be possible.

Water supply to the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown area has also been affected due to a large number of bursts. Crews are now working flat out to find and fix bursts to all affected water mains. However due to the high number of damaged mains, the repairs must be prioritised to fix the biggest and most disruptive bursts first.

"Restrictions will have to stay in place until regional water demand and the region's reservoirs return to normal levels" said Frank Austin, Director of Water & Waste Services. "In the meantime we are asking for the continued co-operation of the public in restricting their water usage as far as possible", he added.

ADVICE TO CUSTOMERS - Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council are advising households and businesses across the County to remain on high alert in relation to water supply and to expect some level of interruption to their service over the coming days. Everything possible will be done to minimise the scale and duration of the disruption. Please continue to conserve supplies as far as possible. All homes will have 24 hour storage in their overhead tanks. Please do not store water in anticipation of any disruption as you will have adequate supply in your tank.

We wish to apologise to customers who may be experiencing delays in getting through by phone to our customer service staff in the Water Services section. We are asking members of the public to bear with us as our staff are dealing with an extremely high volume of calls and are responding to queries on disruption to water supplies throughout the day.

WATER SUPPLY UPDATE: - 11/01/10

The critical water supply situation across the Dublin region is due to a combination of the numerous bursts in water mains caused by the recent freezing weather and increased demand. In Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, the demand for water since the bad weather began has increased by 26%. Accordingly, the Council will be implementing a series of water conservation measures across the County from this evening.

Crews are now working flat out to find and fix leaks to all affected water mains. However due to the high number of damaged mains, the repairs may take some time to complete. Householders and businesses are now urgently requested to conserve water to the greatest possible extent (see tap-tips below) and to attend to any leaks on their own properties for which they have responsibility. The situation is under constant review and will be updated on the website on a daily basis.

Check www.taptips.ie for water saving tips and ideas including the following:

Keep a jug of water in the fridge to avoid running taps for cold water
Use a basin to clean your fruit and vegetables
Don't flush it all away - A third of water used at home is flushed down the toilet.
Be leak free - Fix any dripping taps, cisterns or pipes.
Only run full washing machines and dishwashers - Washing machines use up to 65 litres of water; dishwashers 20 litres.
Don't leave the tap running while brushing your teeth - save 7,000 litres of water a year.
Regular showers use 35 litres of water in 5 mins. Power showers use over 125 litres
Know how to turn off your water supply
Fill the kettle with enough water for your needs.

5 p.m. - 11 January 2010 - Nutgrove Avenue/Braemor Road and Surrounding Areas

Water supply to Nutgrove Avenue (Rathfarnam), Braemor Road and surrounding roads has had to be severely curtailed because of critically low water levels at the supply reservoir.

All customers will experience reduced pressure and many will have no water for a period. It is hoped to marginally increase pressure between 5 pm and 7 pm tonight. After that, pressures will reduce to be marginally increased early morning tomorrow. These timings are approximate as there will be a lag as the network refills.

The situation will be reviewed on Tuesday morning and updates posted on the Council website.
